To stop the spread of misinformation, the White House wanted to act directly on the platform that has become a primary outlet for disseminating news to the masses, especially to young audiences. So, on Thursday 10th March, a group of about 30 high-profile influencers on TikTok were invited to receive factual explanations about the Ukrainian conflict. The aim of this initiative, according to the Washington Post, was to clarify the United States’ role in the conflict, its position regarding the possible Russian use of nuclear weapons, and their strategic goals in distributing humanitarian aid. Ultimately, it was about sharing “correct” information on the social network via these influencers. But isn’t it dangerous for governments to exert, unchecked, informative influence on these content creators, exposed to millions of internet users?
